Where Have All the Old Jobs Gone?

North Miami Beach, FL September 15, 2009
A.H. Schectman

                                Long time passing

Joblessness is a new experience for high school students on summer breaks and graduates from colleges looking not just for work but positions into which they could settle for a professional career.  Lucky individuals from each group are thankful for any job even at low end and no future jobs.

One fact of life under the new rules is that some old jobs will no longer be there even IF the bad new times pass; Older technologies are being superseded by a changing sea-change-scape.  Jobs lost to other countries such as the Philippians and India will not, once lost, be easily reacquired for the same rule will apply - time marches on and times change along with opportunities for work.

I'm retired, but I would kid myself if I thought I could go back into the classroom with my old skills.  The world of Academia has changed.  Now I read that school districts are going overseas to find teachers.  I think that means that we are NOT doing a good job of preparing our young people to replace retirees or fill new jobs new technologies require

Along with the jobs, homes and life-styles are disappearing. Our "leaders" have failed us through inept practices of rewarding top policy makers and not paying attention to the changes frantically waving hands: saying pay attention to me.  I am hurting; I have fallen down and can't get up by myself.  The answer given is the old lie.  Rewards will be given to those who help themselves. Those who can't; well that is just too bad.

Where have all the old jobs gone?  They have gone away - that's where.
