Linguists and thinking people have recognized that there are pros and cons to most arguments. To be for something does not mean you are good and the con, being against it, is bad. The reverse of this is true depending on the issue. What I am for or against does not define me. What majorities in either case define issues and settles - until the next time - which direction whole nations will travel in.
War is the simplest example. To be for war, is to condone killing and, of course, endorses the myth that God is on our side. Every nation that goes to war believes that "God is with US" despite the tongue in which it is couched. To be against war, the "con" side can mean many things including thinking that killing is an inhuman matter of solving differences. But war is both an easy and bad way of trying to show that different sides see earth in opposing ways.
"The Earth Is Warming" issue is one of those subjects meant for pundits to endlessly prove positions pro and con. The "warming" crowd shows us scientifically that the earth is indeed warmer than less than a century ago. They show proof that the ice caps are melting, glaciers are melting and seas are rising. They show us that climate has changed and polar bears and walrus populations are threatened by loss of habitat. They wonder why more are not alarmed at these prospects.
All this may be true, say the cons: So what if the earth is warming". They point out that the earth has had many ice ages and periods of warming in between AND without the interference or aiding and abetting by the growing human population. This group points out that there once were dinosaurs roaming the earth and times when there were huge amounts of foliage that were buried and became coal and oil deep in the earth which had changed its character without human activity. This is certainly true but there are lessons here that we should learn.
Different sides TODAY see our earth in opposing ways. There is more of a contest to see who is right than seeing a threat to our lives and doing something about it. But there is a third side that says the problem is too big and there is nothing that can be done about the loss of ice and the gain of water.
Despite the warnings and the increase in arguments pro and con about Global Warming, nothing much is being done besides the human population being spectators and some non-human species becoming extinct. Since we cannot stop our proclivity in making war on each other (in the name of God) I doubt very much that we will stop making comments pro and con and DO something sane about it. This process is accelerating at a rate we can see but it isn't bad enough yet to do something about it. We would rather talk about it.
