It's Always 'or Something Else'

North Miami Beach, FL June 1, 2009
A.H. Schectman

I find the current troubles the Obama Administration is having with its close friend, Israel, interesting.  It is always "or something else": this means, that when push comes to shove (which happens all the time in the "Holy Land") Israel will have to make more concessions in its efforts to assure its peace as a neighbor and its peace of mind.

I spent yesterday polishing up the documents I prepared to present to my handler, Rabbi David Young, my version of how my second Bar Mitzvah would play out in the Sanctuary of Temple Sinai of North Dade on August 15, 2009.  In the Devar Torah I have written several times over on the content of my portion called Re'eh, I called Moses a "NAG".  I did this because the entire book of Deuteronomy is filled with his repetitions and memoranda about each of the demands made on the Hebrew people if they are to remain the "Chosen" people of God.  The text goes like this, 'If you do all my commandments, you will be blessed and be my people'.  The commandments take up much of the space in this last peroration of Moses who is credited for writing the whole of the Torah content himself. He reinforces this portion with its "Blessings and Curses".  If you do as you are told, you are blessed.  If you do not, you are cursed.

It is always something else.  Now, if the Israelis had put together plans to save the Palestinians, the result would have been much different from the standoff that exists today.  A plan such as loans to start businesses and sending experts to show how to make the land produce much better than it has done for 60 years. The weak government in one of its part and the warlike government in its other part have prevented the "Palestinians" from creating one state (in two parts - a palpable impossibility).  The reality of the Israelis' existence depends on their being a client state of the U.S.A.  The reality is the poverty of the "Palestinians" who as clients of their Arab neighbors, has kept them in "refugee camps" for that same 60 years.

The "or else" in this situation is that in the vacuum of activity on the part of the "Palestinians" to create a singe state of their own in two parts or two states in the West Bank and Gaza, the Israelis have chosen to send settlers to create outposts in land that ultra nationalists claim was given to them and reiterated in the Re'eh portion of the Torah that I am to read on August 15.  Mr. Obama has yet to utter the "or else" to the Israelis while trying to placate the Saudis on the one hand while trying to deal with the Iranians and the Syrians on the other hand, who are waiting for the word to once again ride up to the gates of Jerusalem - because Allah (God) tells them to. They infer this for Allah only spoke with Mr. Muhammad and made no mention of the land of Israel. Mr. Obama has a hard job to do and it is in all our interests to see he gets it done.
