It is a matter of scale, I suppose. There has been no let up in the rape, murder and relocation of millions of innocent citizens in Darfur by Sudanese soldiers and the gangs of religious and racist "militants" who continue to decimate this country. The "racist" words of the Obama candidate for the Supreme Court now being scrutinized minutely are not the cause for lynching Ms Sotomayer by Republican Non-thinking Heads. They use these words to paint her in colors which themselves are lies.
You don't have to be a genius - this is not rocket science - to see that what Ms. Sotomayer has been accused of is essentially a realistic commentary on how judgments do not mete out justice. The same fervor was not seen in the review of earlier candidates for the Supreme Court by revealing out and out racist remarks and despite knowledge of this, these candidates were passed and now sit on the Court.
What Ms. Sotomayer said is that when considering the elements of a court case the jurist might do well by putting his male, white and privileged self in the shoes of the person who is being judged. The scale of what Ms Sotomayer said is tiny and most correct while being overshadowed by the racists crimes committed continually on this day while the world does nothing.
One woman leaves the court. One woman might be thought to justly replace her. One "white" woman leaves the court, why not have a "non-white", a Hispanic woman, replace her? I cannot see the problem except that a problem exists. It exists in the Republican elected and non-elected spokespersons that have nakedly come out against Ms Sotomayer because of who she is and not really against what she has said. Many of the present members of the Court have backgrounds where what they said many years ago should have kept them off the Court.
The most egregious example of poor quality of background for the Court is presently sitting quietly on his "Black" seat on the Court not doing much or adding much to the discourse that takes place there. His was a case that turns upside down the arguments against using specific words belonging to a nominee - out of context -to damn that candidate for membership on the highest Court in the land.
You cannot admire the opponents of Ms Sotomayer for their convictions. These convictions convict them for being not only partisan (excusable) but for being racist and just plain numb-headed opposition to making the court freer of its conservative leanings - a long-time project of the "Right" side of this country.
