A Movie to Make You Think

North Miami Beach, FL May 17, 2009
A.H. Schectman

The name of this movie is, "Is Anybody There", which I do not think you will rush out to see.  We did today and I will not tell you any more about it except to say it is about mortality.  It was really well done but it turned my thoughts to personal matters concerning living and dying.

I remember well the thoughts about my own Immortality when I was very young.  I never thought about the inevitability about people dying although their presence and then absence was there to see. When young, it seems that older people want to shield children from the reality that life ceases for all.  In fact, we all live in order to someday die.  Thus religions were created to tell us stories about a future beyond our lives - perhaps in a heaven which resembled the oases with pure cold water in the midst of arid deserts.

I think that most people realize the silliness of promising potential martyrs that if they gave up their lives in service to one cause or another, they would be rewarded by their God and assured that their wildest erotic dreams would be fulfilled.  For those who dream of a life beyond the only one in this life they would have, perhaps the thought of such an extra-normal "being-ness" is justification for prayer to a God that would grant them life beyond life.

As I grow older I think about the end of my life and I conclude there is absolutely nothing I can do to extend it. If I really wanted it to go to where I am falling apart senile and would be just as happy as to not breath as to breath, I further conclude that this life should end.

For those of us who want to freeze our living bodies until some future time when life can be extended without pain and free from debilitating age and disease - they want what the ancient Egyptians wanted although those who could afford it had to mummify their bodies to ensure immortality.  And then, there are those of us who want to dig them up and spoil that immortality for them.  Some people have strange beliefs not only about how this world works but that they could go to a heaven if they are good and thus be rewarded.  The reverse is also believed that if they are bad (mostly other people) they will go to a hell.

We make our own lives and I THINK that our immortality is contained in the seed within us that produces new life that hopefully will live after us in a continuous cycle.  My hope is to reach my 2nd Bar Mitzvah and then cruise around the world for four months.
