I have has a few deadlines placed on goals generally agreed to as the end-point in an assigned endeavor. I had to turn out reams of documentation with only the help of Carol when a fruitless duplication of paperwork was demanded of me to have ready the next morning. Needless to say, we both worked very hard on producing what ultimately was unread and unused in a hearing I was required to testify at in Trenton before the Chancellor of Higher Education. You need not know the other details for they are demeaning and will only open more old wounds.
One should have goals. There are all kinds and differ for each of us. My present goal is to learn the Hebrew for my Bar Mitzvah next August 15. The deadline I have set for myself is to learn my portion way ahead of time, by the end of May. It is now May 15 and there are just 16 more days in May for me to accomplish this goal.
Mine is a minor little world of study. The goals for our country under its present administration are huge and have a world's weight of problems pressing down on President Obama and those he has entrusted to aid him. I have to sit and study, memorize and chant which are things I have not done for over 70 years ago. And, I really am not a student for whom these things come easily. By constant rote repetition I might be able to bring it off.
Mr. Obama and his allies in the Legislative Branch are faced not only with the details of very complicated legislation covering years of neglect and deliberate sabotage of desperately needed help for those who cannot help themselves. It is interesting to note that many of the richest people in this country have not changed their way of living but continue to contribute to their pet charities. On the one hand they remain the same and on the other hand they emulate the best intentions that instruct the rest of us to give to the many causes out there. We are on so many lists because we gave to those we felt were most neglected. Now we are inundated with requests from scores of others we never heard of before. I think our names were sold to others who found us willing to help others.
But, I digress. The goals of this country should be to help all those groups who spend so much on postage to beg us for contributions. We are doubly taxed because we pay our taxes and then help these others. I like the "cradle to grave" philosophy of some countries not so very different from ours. What a relief it would be if the goals were reached and the deadlines ended.
