This was the advice that was given by Norman Thomas, a sometimes presidential candidate (I think it was his advice. He ran at least four times for the Presidency). The same kind of advice can be given for those unhappy with our government and are suggesting strongly that their state or region "secede". Why not clean up the present government instead of exchanging their vision of a better government for the bad one presently making bad decisions and making them bitter? Decisions like this have consequences.
I know of a lot of kids, including my younger son, who, unhappy with the governmental rule of parents want to and sometimes try to secede from the family. You can make the same kind of observation about a member of a marriage who cannot abide the agreement originally made to unify to break away and dissolve the ties that once bound them together. In other words, some partners in a union dissolve the union, secede and break away. Kids often run away from "home".
It has been observed that the only constant is change. Everything changes. Youth gives way to age and age gives life away. Neighborhoods are constantly reformulating with additions and subtractions to the housing and the services which once lined streets. Once filled with character and characters, they empty out.
You really can't go home again. It once served you but now someone else lives where you once thrived and thought it would go on forever. Life is not really like that. Life is full of surprises and the lesson of life is that you must learn constantly about it and its rules which constantly are tested and often changed.
"These" are the rules which most of us learn as children. Some of the things we are not to do are practiced right in front of us and we wonder about their application to the way a child will grow up to be an adult. We have young towns grow up to be nasty cities. The old rules constantly changed to keep up with changing populations who were born elsewhere. New people arrived equipped with a bag of customs that differ from what once oversaw behavior where you grew up. This is called cosmopolitanism and brings a whole satchel full of problems.
I think the unhappy and yappy multitudes who are pushing to pull the house down to improve it are the same group who are reviving the secession noise once heard in the land when the old South wanted to keep their slaves and to hell with this union business. We, they said, will form our own government. If government was so bad, why not have anarchy in which government is abandoned completely?
