I have lots of thoughts because there are lots of things to think about. I have discovered, however, that there is an area of thought that I rarely enter. This is the endless talking about sports. The Kentucky Derby was just won by a 50 to 1 contender which only enforces the knowledge that I know nothing about betting, scores and statistics which seem to be the meat and drink of the world of physical activity.
It looks to me like most of the world and only a tiny fraction of it are deeply involved in contests of all sorts. The tiny fraction is the gladiators who face one another either in pairs or teams against teams. The rest of most of the world have never expended any personal effort to play in any sports beyond what they experienced on the playground in childhood. The rest of their lives are spent in devouring news about "THEIR" teams' record, or attending the contests or at least following them on TV or on the radio, if traveling. There is nothing quite like being on the team that is reported about. There is nothing like being thrown by a blocker, being kicked in the head in a scrum or being knocked down and trampled on in any number of "sports".
I admit to complete ignorance and disinterest in this world of sports. Long before my knees were replaced and I was told that I could not use a bicycle outdoors I had been quite a traveler on the streets and roadways. Before that I was a jogger until my knees and hips told me to stop. Now, I cannot hike any more except to use canes to take the weight of my body off my stenosis residing in my spine. I have a thought about this state of affairs and it is expressed in any one of the negative expletives favored by the young of today.
I have a thought about why so many make so much about the physicality of the few. Since teams are made up of players who complement each other most of us would not fit into team play. You can find a wall and hit a ping pong ball against it but that palls in short order. You can play an opponent in a tennis match but if you are like me you will have a tennis elbow or throw your back out as I have done.
I like wall climbing. I had a situation once where I found this wall with no visible hand-holds. I needed to climb up that wall to get to the other side and was goaded by a companion who made my life miserable for I had to be capable in most sports and judgments or would be a nerd. My judgment was lacking in not being able to get over that wall but after much prodding and desperation, the deed was managed. Not quite sport but this might be a reason for eschewing sports today. No one wants to be a nerd.
