I know this for a fact because we have had invitations printed and I am now about to embark on a "correction" detail. You see, I typed too fast and reread too slowly and missed typing a 0 in my telephone number and typed a 9 instead. No real problem except that the correction of changing a 9 to a 0 will take a lot of time to make it look nice.
All this is in anticipation of completing this "correction" detail and sending out invitations to my 2nd Bar Mitzvah on August 15, 2009. I did the initial work and typed in the original mistake so, Jenine (who knows how to use the computer much better than I) resized the pages, centering the information and just copied what I sent her. In any event, between the two of us I put a Menorah instead of the Magen David on the front and I added a picture of A 1 (the marionette of my wearing my original 1939 Talit) and me, A2 standing next to him on the rear panel of the card.
The invitation is a classy job and looks professional and you won't even notice (if you are invited - those at great distances really are invited but we cannot expect you to come so far just to see me and myself being us at my 2nd Bar Mitzvah) that the "9" has been changed to a "0" in the telephone number.
I am sorry that all of you will not come to my Bar Mitzvah. Plans probably have already been made for the latter part of August. And, too, traveling great distances for a morning service on Shabbat only to go home after we feed the guests at the Oneg Shabbat following the service is asking too much of too many people.
Carol and I expect a small number of friends and relatives from far away to come. Most of our Florida "family" of friends in Temple, Choir, Aquasize class and our Condominium will certainly be invited. Not all will be able to come but we are sending out the invitations and will see what the responses will be.
I have tried to gain control of the entire service but a struggle will ensue over some of my innovations and departures from standard ritual. It should be interesting to see how things turn out.
One thing that I would like to see and is now in process of negotiations is for me to be backed up by our guitar playing Rabbi David so I and A 1 can lead the Congregation in singing "Last Night I Dreamed the Strangest Dream" about peace in the world. We could use a little more imagination in what we do and certainly should support peace in the world in our time. It would be a Mitzvah.
