Demonzing the Sermonzers

North Miami Beach, FL February 27, 2009
A.H. Schectman

This government of 2,009, yours and mine, has just delivered a sermon concerning the BUDGET. The sermonizers, those who present the facts as they see them, have not been unusually unctuous as those in the past.  They sort of tell it as it is.  These are hard times, people are out work, people have lost their homes and the previous government has done little except to tsk, tsk - isn't that too bad - bite the bullet and stiff upper lip; and more like that.  The budget makers tell you to hold the line right where you are and we will get to you after we take some money from the rich (who got richer during the last eight years) to spread it around to the poor.  Lucky folks almost making $250,000.00 a year will not pay taxes and those making more will have a graduated tax so that those making the most will pay the most.  This is an old idea from the 19th Century that we put to use during the great Depression of the 1930's and it worked until the Teflon in chief, Mr. R. Reagan, reversed the idea and began to pay the rich to become richer.  Something was wrong with this idea and it is only now that something is being done to correct it.  This sermon is now ending.

The demonizers have never gone away but they have wakened, like locusts, to try to smother by the weight of their arguments the sermonizing winners of the election and grind them into the dust - they, and their socialistic ideas!  Many are the plans of those who demonize the new budget:  It will not work for it was made by Democrats.  Some Democrats say it will not work because they went along with the Republicans for so many years that it is hard to distinguish one from the other.

Some say that this budget still spends too much money on the wrong programs.  After all, the farmers need the help - you know the lean years and the fat years?  Many have forgotten that the small farmer who needed help was swallowed up by the big corporate farms what made their own help by owning much of the Congress.  These make the best demonizers.

The sermonizers have had their say.  They put together a package of cures that will not work right away for the damage they will try to control is just too great.  It is like the paltry help thrown at the damage done by Katrina - too little and not in the right places.  Those levees were wrong in the first place and to correct the damage will take much time and much money and too little is planned for right now.  But, the time is right to get to work, say the sermonizers: They created the budget.

They say that universal health must come along with repair of education while we work on the economics of our DEPRESSION.  The demonizers say the sermonizers have it all wrong.  I guess we will have to wait and see.
