I have been monitoring the state of confusion in science. It is abundantlyclear that some moderns' intelligence is a throwback to primitive times. One would think that it is not only generally accepted but clearly proven that the earth is NOT flat. The present confusion by some generally accepted intelligent and well educated people over the importance of teaching Mr. Darwin and his ideas of evolution is hard to understand itself. Faith is a great thing. I have faith that I will get up in the morning and the weather will be what it is and I will eat breakfast while I know that there are many on these very cold Florida days that are homeless and have no hope of eating breakfast. This is the way the world works on a round world. But there are those who are throwbacks to the days when the world as we know it was downside up.
I like the stories in the Bible. I read the Bible religiously every Saturday morning and every other chance I get to help me in my very long self-inflicted task of writing about Nebuchadnezzar's Pillar. But, the story of creation in the Bible was taught to me in Hebrew School and not in public school. I think there is no need to lead us into confusion by giving children the option to choose between the story of creation and the scientific proofs of evolution. But, then, I am no believer in "FAITH BASED" education. It is a confusing element in a field that should be based on fact, proven over and over again until even numbskulls appreciate the elegance of those proofs. Science should be left to the scientists.
I really do not want to disrespect our primitive ancestors. We have, you know, built up our knowledge of how the world works on their first steps into the world of solid fact and ideas which were once merely hypotheses. We stand on their shoulders, those who made the first steps for mankind in understanding the reality of our universe. There is no heaven that can be discerned and no proofs of angelic beings flitting on wings up there. There is this earth that is round and blue against the blackness of space that is pierced with worlds and suns too distant for our primitive (though quite scientifically thorough) understanding to parse and understand fully enough to satisfy any thoughtful person that the Bible belongs in houses of worship and that evolution belongs in the schools.
I will keep on monitoring the situation and let you know what I find in subsequent issues of THINKING ALLOWED. You do know, do you not, that thinking is allowed? One wonders if it disallowed in the Faith Based institutions that clutter up our thinking in the hallowed halls where laws are made.
