Restless People

North Miami Beach, FL December 10, 2008

There was a time, not very long ago, that some Americans were thinking about moving to Canada or to Australia and New Zealand.  Times were tough - not economically, but spiritually.  The election of and then distrust of the top "leader" of the country inspired thinking there was a better place. We all hope for a better run and basically free of worry place we call our own.  Some well-off Americans flock to Mexico and other poorer nations where they can buy human services and live like kings.  The poor stay home here and end up suffering more when economic, social and political organizations fail them.  That is happening now.  At a time when we export jobs to the poor of other nations, our poor just get poorer and are exploited at the same time.

It probably began when the first Homo sapiens became erect two-legged animals and left Africa and began to be the dominant life form on this globe.  They left their home places when population pressures and territorial ambitions pushed some people from the east to the west.  It may have begun when Cain was forced to leave the neighborhood of Eden. This has gone on for thousands of years.

I noticed that Spain is the destination of choice by Romanians and South Americans who are looking for the utopia that lurks in the back of people's minds.  We, in America, look like utopia to Mexicans and other South Americans who simply walk across the border to take advantage of an economy, social and political order that seems to be far more advanced than the one they are leaving.  Here in America the It is easy to understand why the services of a community organizer were needed - the one who gained his experience helping people before the people turned to him and made him the 44th President of the U.S.

Restless pre-historic people found a way to these shores before they were "discovered" by the hordes of Europeans who took the land away from them.  Then those restless Europeans found they could not work the land possibly because they would have to get their hands dirty. These Europeans could not successfully enslave the "Indians" so they pacified them by extermination and enslaved un-restless Africans who were dragged to American shores where their labor was exploited.

Yet, restlessness is part and parcel of the human condition.  Carol and I had our time when we bought a used trailer and pull vehicle and roamed the country to see its wonders and thought that there were places we would like to stay when it was time for our retirement.  We get to see the movement of people north to south and south to north who are the "summer" people in New Jersey and the "snow-birds" in Florida.  For a while there, we were snowbirds too.

Restlessness is in the feet and bodies of human beings.  They like it where they are but there are other places they would also like. They seem to think the "grass" is "greener" over there.  It seems that airplanes and cruise ships take up some of their energy but restlessness is even in the young who want to leave nests and find homes someplace else. If you look closely you will see them being restless and preparing to move into or out of your neighborhood. Good luck to us all.
