Americans have chosen Barak Hussein Obama despite his name, his race and his “elitist” education. He gave superb speeches in which he outlined the changes needed to make America live up to its promise. It is time for the beginning of a new day in America.
I really don’t think this is the end of anything except the stopping of the incessant noise generated by those in charge of letting us know we just had to vote for their particular candidate. All of this tumult obscured the shame of the previous two terms of a man just not up to the job of President and certain this was so when the two headliners were slugging it out trying to project the proper image of who that President should be. We always stumble in trying to do the right thing. Obama articulated what that right thing should be.
The numbers are in and the conclusion reached that we no longer have George W. Bush to look forward to four more years of the same with his supposed successor. John McCain gave a great valedictory speech in concession – something missing from his months of incessant negative preaching from the bully pulpit as Republican candidate for the First job in America. But this is all past us now. The end of the beginning poises us at the start of the beginning the job of rebuilding America. Americans have decisively made their choice. The beginning is here and much is needed to be done. America was mired in wars of its choosing and now has the job of getting out of Iraq and finishing what needs to be done in Afghanistan. We must finally end the threat of Osama bin Laden who must be hunted down as soon as possible. This should not be the job of governments but our government was attacked and shamed that this man could do what he did so simply and elegantly and still remains hidden and protected by those who really are the enemies of America. Our new President will have to show he is our Commander in Chief.
While America was sleeping under George W. Bush, giant monsters were allowed to grow and ravage the homes, the countryside and the businesses of this country. Workers were thrown out of work while giant companies waltzed over to other parts of the world with jobs that could be done more cheaply by plundering the labor of foreign workers and paying them much less than what Americans would have been earning. The continuing process of union breaking was a destination of the Republican Party which now sees all its efforts exposed as the antithesis of what America has been all about. We were supposed to be a “Light unto the Nations” but when the wattage was turned up we were shown to be a shallow, self interested and truly ignorant country that only saw White is right, barely educated and having money and position as rewards for not thinking but simply taking Me, Me and Me too far.
For far too long the ethos of American Business was making money at any cost and morality never was part of this picture. The practice of rewarding the making of obscene amounts of money for the few is, I think, now about to end.
It is time for the Beginning of making America live up to its promise. This election goes beyond Martin Luther King’s “dream”.
