There is no getting around it. I just reread a perfectly well thought out essay and one of the responses chided me on my inability to get things wrong by never losing a chance to be a “pro-choice poster child”. I think my respondent missed the point of my essay but there are different views of reality. One view says “spare the rod and spoil the child”. I think this means, if you get away with it you haven’t been brought to justice by performing violence on a minor. Another view says that if two persons commit to a life together they cannot do so legally because they are not one man and one woman. The converse: reality says that two parents of opposite sexes do not guarantee a valid marriage for life. In fact, reality says that there are more divorces than marriage according to keepers of such records. People keep making the same mistake of thinking that their views of reality match the views of reality of their partner. It just isn’t so.
This partner business is interesting. Once, it was the custom of two people agreeing to something and signed it by shaking hands. A person’s word was his bond. I do believe that one of the campaign slogans baldly states that all lawyers are rats and that tort reform might reduce the numbers of people who try to enforce their views on other people with different views. Of course, the viewpoint of one person depends on his or her point of view and vice versa.
This election business has become a big business. The amount of money spent by all the campaigns could have fed a couple of small nations for years. It is interesting to note how it also has become entertainment. No one would watch a badly put together film or speech if it was boring. It has to be entertaining or at least have bits and pieces that catch your interest.
It is like the teaching process. You can, as students, sit and listen to a lecture that is full of facts but you find your attention wandering. If the lecturer stops talking and asks your opinion and you have to think, maybe a new slant can be put on the subject at hand. I just saw a video of a group of students in a debate class who put together a song and dance lesson on the candidates and issues in this election. Very interesting, informative and not one bit boring. It is instructive that the election points are varied and are not just things which he or she said.
Views of reality are just that. You have your view and I have mine. It would be very nice if we could sit down and find the points where we agree so we can get off to a new start and have a dialogue instead of competing monologues.
