Tweaking Hearing

North Miami Beach, FL October 24, 2008
A.H. Schectman

Carol has great powers of patience.  My hearing, even with my new expensive hearing aids (my third pair), was not good enough so I turned them off - often.  Carol was not amused.  But, in our singing in the Temple “Vocal Group” and the Choruspondent’s Choir, I found it difficult to hear and sing at the same time.  It was time to go back to the hearing doctor and have my aids checked out.  So we went and my hearing was tweaked. I have come to realize I miss a lot.

This doctor was the latest in a series of representatives of the hearing aid makers.  She turned out to know a great deal more than the other earlier representatives.  So, I now have my hearing tweaked and sounds are much louder and clearer than before.  I also can differentiate between the conversations around me in restaurants.  I am speaking from only a few hours since I had my hearing aids tweaked.  All of this tweaking was done on a computer and the doctor clicked different buttons and the screen showing interesting lines changed each time.

What I like so much about what is promised and yet to be proven is that she said she could replace a program I did not use too much with a “music” program.  This should make it easier for me to sing and hear myself and the others in the choir.  I had found myself moving my seat so I could read the lips of the director and hope the sounds I heard were the ones she expected.  This will be tested out next Tuesday at our next rehearsal.

One solution she suggested might work with telephones is for me to hold the ear piece a little higher.  I found this did not work and still have to take out the hearing aid from my left ear in order to hear.  I just learned this a little while ago after I got a call from Charlie Demos who decided that he wanted to talk to me.  We had gone to the hot pool in Jackson North for the first time in months and I had asked about the missing personages who were not in the pool today.  I remember asking if Charlie had been around and they said he never appeared in our absence. So, lo and behold, he just called.  It is good to hear from friends and good to be able to hear in ways I had not been able to with the programs in my aids.

This trip to have my hearing checked added up to tweaking the programs and doing a little sanding off some high spots in my right aid.  That had often become sore and I would just take the aids out and leave them out.  I hope that the

Tweaking just done will do the trick.  I would like to hear like the rest of the world.
