Some Pros and Cons About Voting Early

North Miami Beach, FL October 20, 2008
A.H. Schectman

One particularly nice thing about voting early is that you must have already made up your mind or have a page in front of you to prompt you on choices (in our case it is the Official Voting Instructions for our district).  The best thing about it is that you probably will avoid the crowds making up their minds at the last minute and probably changing it back and forth as such people are wont to do.  Another good thing about voting early is that you can be checked out to see if you are registered or some little worm in the records has eaten a precious hole in the form and important information is lacking.  I have heard of the stories of people turned away because of missing information not caused by them

The above paragraph was written this morning before we went out to see Dr. Shoemaker who declared Carol’s wound was healed and she could go in the hot pool again.  We’ll see about driving because it is her right foot that would have to stamp down on the brake in some emergency situation.  But, we were happy that she was happy in telling us that the condition of her wound and the damaged Achilles tendon had improved so much.

The drive down to see Dr. S. and back again was untroubled by the work being done to 95 but we were tired out by anticipation of this visit.  We had lunch, went to SPA 2000 to have Carol’s nails done and then decided we were too tired out to go to the first day of voting.  That was a good choice.

The word is that the lines were long – a con for voting early.  But, this was the first day although the numbers were heartening.  The pro is that this is just the first day and there should be other times in the next few days where we could just slip in and out fairly fast.  One other con is that if there are lines, even if short, Carol will need her wheel-chair instead of having to stop and go standing up until we get to the voting booth.

Despite all the trouble a voter will have to go through, this is democracy in action and the pro part is that with so many new voters added to the old, perhaps the old, bad days will be over and a new administration with new ideas will win and be clearly and distinctly declared unequivocally the new President and a new Democratic House of Representatives and new veto proof Senate.  From these words to God’s ears. Amen.
