Yesterday We Made Waves

North Miami Beach, FL October 10, 2008
A.H. Schectman

It was raining hard yesterday morning before we began our trip to the Temple for Yom Kippur.  In a lightening up of the rain while it was still pouring from the roof, we went to the car and were minimally wet getting Carol in the front seat and the wheel chair in the car’s trunk.  The rain was very light as we traveled the back way to get to the temple four long and a few short blocks away.  Just before we reached the spot where we could go out to Miami Gardens Drive we decided to turn left into a flood.  We drove slowly but we made waves. All the cars were driving carefully and slowly trying not to make waves.

The trip to the Temple was through a flooded street and partially flooded roads where we were lucky enough to follow the car in front of us and proceeded in its wake for most of the distance.  That car was slow and we were happy because the waves didn’t come up high on the sides of the vehicles but were pushed to the right and the left.  There is a high spot in most streets where the waters are not as high as in the gutters and we tried to stay right in the middle.  We were lucky in that there was little traffic going the other way.  Coming home we stayed on the main roads.

The rain came down and there was no place for it to go for we live in a part of Florida that is mostly cemented over.  So, we had to travel through streets that were flooded, some worse than others.  This, in a way – despite it being a day among days filled with AWE – was good because our particular area was dry for weeks with rain falling all around us.  This time it got us good. We stayed dry in the Temple most of the day.

I got to thinking that how much better it would be if we got a little rain now and then instead of all at once like this one.  Pushing the wheel-chair on dry paving is not too difficult but getting slopping wet for there is no other way when it is time for the heavens to open up is quite distressing and messy.  But, we made it and I was able to let Carol off under the over hang and find a parking place not to far from the front door. Did I say that coming home we stayed on the main roads? They proved not to be flooded.

I find that I like to hear sermons that make waves.  The wishy-washy kind are sort of the approved house model.  I like those that break away from the formulas and find new ways to make us think.  That, after all, is what my writing is all about.  I like it that THINKING is ALLOWED and would hope that my readers would agree OR disagree more often to get those THINKING muscles working.

Speaking up or speaking your mind is thinking and that is sort of like making waves.  You get noticed when the waters (read troubles or problems) are so high that the waves are already at flood stage and we are not only aware of this but are willing to add our voices and make waves that way.  Perhaps we will be blessed with help – now that we need it.
