Flipping Through the Calendar

North Miami Beach, FL October 2, 2008
A.H. Schectman

There is a big but inconsequential debate on for tonight.  The two Vice – Presidential candidates will have an opportunity to be seen and heard in what is euphemistically called a debate.  What it is, you see, is parading in front of a huge audience the second bananas who predictably will have at each other with vim and vigor to demonstrate their ability to outlast four years as the President of the Senate.  They will also be held to answer questions that would defeat lesser human beings.  It will be interesting.

But this is about flipping through the calendar to see what October and the (Jewish month of Tishre (and two days of Cheshvan) have to offer us.  Since the calendar that I chose from the many which have reached me by mail, I chose the Jewish one for the English one will not include the Hebrew feast days and the new moon which has special meaning for the Female half of those who are observant.

Despite tonight’s debate and working our way towards Election Day on Tuesday in November (6 Chesvan) we should also take note that the “Fast of Gedalia” is also on my calendar for October 2.  If I look it up and you are interested, I will explain it to you.  You do know, do you not, that Muslims have finished with their month of Ramadan and this is not registered on either of my calendars.  Strange – because there are so many millions more of the Islamic tradition and it does not show up here and now that we are involved with the intricacies of solving the financial crisis on Wall Street and the other foreign Streets where similar deals are made.

We Jews get to celebrate Yom Kippur ( The Day of Atonement) which is followed by Sukkot and Shemini Artzeret and finally Simchat Torah (the Giving of the Torah) and then Halloween.  Please note the irony for Halloween is an ancient pagan holiday that was resurrected and continued in our culture although not noticed in many others.  It really has nothing to do with Christian beliefs – I think – but I will look that up for you, too, if you are interested.

There are a lot of organizations that are interested in sending us free calendars in order to get their messages across.  The wild-life and other “Green” tree-hugging types are acceptable in our home.  I am not sure if the hate groups including the Nazi and White Supremacists who live down here in the Sunshine State have calendars they send out to harvest new members who must look at a calendar to remember when they are.  But I was sent quite a few.  Want one?
