Dual Senior Moments

North Miami Beach, FL September 24, 2008
A.H. Schectman

Yesterday, we were at a good session of the Correspondent’s Choir           .  Carol sat with the Altos and I with the Bases.  We both put our bags underneath the chairs.  At the conclusion of the rehearsal I went over to where I put my canes and our rolling bag of music.  Then I went over to Carol and collected her with her cane, folding seat and put her music in the rolling bag and away we went.

We were discussing lunch on our way down 95 when Carol noted that she did not have her shoulder bag and we had to go back – turn around at the next exit.  I thought that we could call up the David Center where we rehearse but discovered that MY carryall bag was not in the car and certainly not around my shoulder.  We both had left our phones, wallets, money and a collection of necessities divided between us.  We could not call back for my bag was underneath the chair on which I had been sitting.  Carol remembered that her bag was underneath the chair in which she had been sitting.  I had brought her portable folding chair back when I picked up her music but did not notice her bag under the chair.  We certainly were a pair of incompetents.

We drove down 95 discussing what we must do but what we did was turn around and go back to David Center and drove up to the entrance.  We could see that the bags were missing.  Going inside we found that the bags had been found by a Choir member, Rusty, whom a custodian knew. Then we knew we were half way to a solution.  Our cell phones were in our bags so we could not call.  I had the keys to the car and our keys to get into our Apartment.  Carol had left everything in her bag since she has no pockets.

We carefully drove home again and found a message from Rusty who had picked the bags up and planned to drive them over to us.  We were rescued but we had been given a signal.  One should take such warnings seriously.

We had several incidents of failure to remember things like protecting valuables by knowing where they were at all times.  This time we both had no licenses, no wallets, no phones, no cameras (in my case) and medications in case of asthma attacks.

This signal has been sent and we have seriously thought about it.  We were lucky.  Rusty brought our identifications back to us and we now had to take better care of where they are at all times.  We were lucky this time but I think we have to keep a list of all the things we came in with and make sure we had them on our way out.  Any suggestions or other ideas?
