We're Going to an Obama Rally Today

North Miami Beach, FL September 21, 2008
A.H. Schectman

Well actually, we are going to hear “Ambassador Dennis Ross, former U.S. Envoy to the Middle East –ON BEHALF OF BARACK OBAMA”.  It would have been great to have Barak waltz in and we were there to see him.  Surrogates are good, though.

We were in Temple (where this ‘Rally’ will be held in an hour or so) on Friday night because of it being the anniversary of Lady Lil’s birthday.  We were there yesterday in the morning because of Bible Study (Ruach) and in the evening we sang as the Temple “Vocal Group” to celebrate “Selichot” which ends one year and prepares us for the High Holy Days and the New Year.  It is a busy weekend.

Carol just turned her sheets of Democrat voters over to the runner from the Democrat Party.  She called everyone on her list and carefully registered those who said “yes I will vote in the coming election”.  Most said they will vote for Obama.  A couple said no, and there were the “Please leave a message” and just a few hang-ups.  It is going to be an interesting election.  Carol’s participation is professional and she reported that her sheets of names would really go out (they said) and vote for Barak Obama.

It is interesting to hear that many Jews will vote AGAINST Obama because of his name and antecedents rather than on issues.  It is crucial that ALL registered voters get out on Election Day (or before if that has been planned by mail or in person).  This country is in trouble and we need to see whose message has gotten across and where the money is behind which candidate.  It has always intrigued me that Obama has run a campaign on a grass roots basis not accepting Federal money. There is a difference in philosophies here and the striking contrast between the two parties is all the more significant because the incumbent is dragging down McCain and Palin.

Now, Palin.  There is a strategic move that will either do as the planners thought or sink the Republicans at the polls.  We all know Hillary and Sarah Palin is no Hillary Clinton.  But, so what?  People will or have made up their minds either on the basis of the lies and swift-boating that went into gear as soon as conventions adopted their nominees or out of lethargy either vote as their daddy’s did or by party rather than the issues and which party stands for what.

We are going to a rally at the Temple today.  It is just a place where a lot of people can gather.  I hope a lot will turn out – even the protesters.
