It is interesting to read in the papers and trying to digest all the words expended on the Dictator Fidel Castro’s giving way to the next generation of such leadership. Non-elected in our sense, he is dictator for life. His followers do not seem to want to change this system very much. His opponents, the most populous group in South Florida, disapprove a clone of Fidel. I think they would prefer someone more of a democratic bent.
The contrast between the end of a 40 plus year reign and the 8 years stolen by George W. Bush (with the assent of the newly burnished ecologist, Al Gore who won the votes but not the approval of the Republican dominated Supreme Court) could not be greater. We do things differently here. I remember the walls splattered with the blood of non-communists who opposed Castro’s Communism. All it took was to be anonymously denounced to the kangaroo courts at the conclusion of the war to throw out the capitalists and put up against a wall where firing squads ended lives.
We do things differently here. Yet, the big question remains: Is Castro actually giving up? Whether he turns the government permanently to his “younger” brother Raul, remains to be seen but father time that will take the life out of 2007 will certainly soon after remove Fidel from the scene.
The big question is succession. We do it differently here and spend millions and millions of dollars on this entertainment that pits Republicans against Democrats and Democrats against Democrats and Republicans against Republicans. The British do it quick and simply with few dollars spent on explaining to the people who the candidates are. The Brits know all about the foibles of the possible candidates for they follow the Parliamentary battles and can get a real sense of who the next leader will be.
We make too big a fuss over personal tastes and preferences of the different wannabees. Each word and grimace that is uttered is given too much attention while the big problems yet to be solved are shelved in favor of a popularity contest. It is really the only entertainment all the time these days.
The most important issue for the voters in America is not the Economy (Stupid) or education, global warming – oh, yes, I forgot – THE WAR. The most important FALSE issue is between a woman as President and a black man as President. Everybody knows that!
