I check almost every e-mail I receive – even those I know are come-ons for me going back to college to get a degree or some sort of aid I could use to take advantage of the Chinese girls who are available for pleasure over the internet. The delete button is great for most of these but there are a few semi-serious/important sounding regulars who I open from time to time to read a really, really important message. This morning I opened one and found a whole series of comments by people who do not sign their full names and are talking to each other but leaving evidence for the world to see what they believe by simply opening up their e-mail.
I think most of us will correspond with someone we trust. Often, a friend will put us together with someone they think is a lot like you or me. So, you exchange messages. This was the first time I experienced an evanescent world where opinions were exchanged constantly – back and forth – chiding each other for being wrong and emphasizing the criminality of Americans who support Israel while Israel is pulling the strings to get America to Atomize Iran before Iran gets nuclear ability. Israel, while a tiny place, is guilty of gigantic things just by existing.
I was surprised but I should not be. When you turn over a homeless person who is laying in the dirt you should expect to find him covered with dirt. Turn over the lies that flit from one to another on the internet in the blogs that exist to let anyone – really anyone – who has no credentials except for an OPINION – to bloviate on it. They goad others to agree that they are right and former opinions were wrong. But, now we are on their same page and we all agree to some extent that all the wrong in the world is caused by the existence of Israel. What is surprising is that the word “Jew” is missing in these diatribes.
Instead of being suckered into joining in the exchange of views on this subject by either sick, senile or kidding persons who love the power their words have when appearing on pages like this, I prefer to continue to write my essays and let the answers fall where they may. I have a feeling that I am preaching to the converted, but I have a few correspondents of the Conservative persuasion who like to poke me in the eye with a sharp stick every once and a while. They are too bad, like the examples given above who spend their time being either sick or senile but I have this bad feeling they are very, very serious. By the way, I am honored by being called a Liberal.
In one sense, it is a good thing that we do not have censorship over these expressions. Let them spout – they exist on an insubstantial internet connection. They are not burning books – yet - just using the freedom of speech.
