Double Jeopardy

North Miami Beach, FL July 28, 2007
A.H. Schectman

You must know that single jeopardy means you are in a dangerous spot and that something terrible can happen to you.  Double Jeopardy is a TV game, a question and answer type of game where you pit your wits against the designers of the questions you must ask in order to satisfy the answers which are the form that the host displays for three contestants to try to get the correct question to the answer first.

We have had enough jeopardy in this world without going up another step to double and perhaps triple and quadruple.  One of the answers that bother me in the news today is Iran; when will who strike to take out the Imams?  The nervous suspicion that I have is that the world, especially the United States and its allies fighting next door in Iraq and Afghanistan, are looking to the most vulnerable nation in that area, Israel, to do the deed.  It seems that the thinkers and planners in Israel must have this on their minds because the main suppliers to Hamas are any of the surrounding Muslim countries but, inevitably, the choice comes down to Iran as the chief trouble-maker.  Its leader has made it plain that his plan for Israel is to devastate the country in order to bring the Palestinians back to “their” homeland.

This is a case of you are damned if you do or damned if you don’t.  You are in the middle of a dangerous game of double jeopardy and the answers are all there waiting for you to choose the correct questions.  It is really unreal.  It is the proverbial hot spot, a veritable tight spot in which all the players find themselves and the game goes on in TV Land while the game is played out in the countries surrounding the “Holy Land”.  It is a curious game where no one will win if it escalates up to a nuclear decision.  The logicians who are making up this game in real life posit that Israel, which has the bomb, must do for all the other players, use it to take out Iran before Iran takes out all living things for a thousand years or more by making the Holy Land a non-land where radiation rules.

I would like to see Greece and the islands in the Eastern Mediterranean (which we are planning to do in October) and if we are then granted the opportunity somewhere in the near future, revisit Israel and perhaps get to see the Pyramids in Egypt.  These are storied places that should not be ground zero for madmen or for those who anticipate what those men are planning to do to them first before they do it to them.

Any game where Jeopardy is involved creates fear that we are living it out in the real world. The news on this score escalates the probable outcome. You can’t avoid the answers. Equality, freedom and democracy are irrelevant when zealots vote for action now and to hell with the consequence – which means you and me.
