Is There a Green Walmart Near You?

North Miami Beach, FL December 22, 2006
A.H. Schectman

Plain pipe racks and huge space crowded with all kinds of goods made in China’s sweatshops just for you mark this chain of stores throughout the world.  Now, there are GREEN Walmarts and we must wonder why. We once were in McKinney, Texas where one was built.  One question is: is there a green Walmart near you?  Of course not.  There is no green Walmart near you yet because profits drive Mr. Wal and Mr. Mart and change has to be tested first.

So, the real question is why Walmart Superstores all over the world will one day be GREEN?  The answer is once again, profits.  Now both Mr. Wal and Mr. Mart are not dummies. Their fortune rests on the principle that profitability cannot be lost if you can do something about making it surer and higher and better than anyone else’s. This is true even in China where near slavery conditions out-produce and under-price goods of every kind you could possibly want.

Looking at the profit margins in companies such as Walmart you might think that enough is enough.  But, have you looked at the price of energy these days? Gas and oil which might have come from Iraq is not a factor anymore.  They are too busy fighting each other over there while blowing up our soldiers in their spare time.  No time for their riches under the ground.  Iraq is a loss in the profit column. Maybe it is time for alternate and renewable sources of energy to be used.

Someone over in Walmart woke up and saw a rainbow in the sky and said that GREEN is new and catchy and, HEY – we can use it to make more profits for our company.  Let’s go and be the first to get in on this new idea – You can make a profit by cutting your energy costs and doing things in a slightly different way to light and heat your stores and bring down the Prices (Lower the Prices even more?) but certainly bring down costs and our profits will go up even higher.

I’m forever turning out lights when not needed.  A fan that Carol would like always on to turn in the air of our bedroom (the warmest room in our apartment) uses electricity and I turn it off whenever I can get away with it.  I just removed a burnt out bulb in the staircase outside our apartment and replaced it with an energy saving fluorescent one that uses less energy to produce more light.  That was a freebee for our Association for I did not charge them for the bulb nor for the work to change it.

You needn't wait for Walmart to turn GREEN.  You can do it yourself by a host of different ways of living more intelligently.  But, thank you Mr. Wal and Mr. Mart for showing us the way.
