Deny the Deniers' Freedom to Deny

North Miami Beach, FL December 21, 2006
A.H. Schectman

David Irving, a British citizen imprisoned in Austria for denying the Holocaust ever existed will be freed by a judge who is sympathetic to rightist causes.  What this becomes is abetting the denier’s freedom to deny by freeing him earlier than his sentence called for.  It is not particularly complicated although Austria, once annexed by Hitler, was one of the first nations to make denying the Holocaust a crime.  Mr. Irving was put on trial by Deborah Lipstadt who accused him of committing a crime when he denied the vast evidence that the Holocaust DID really exist.  What a terribly wasteful and humiliating event to have to experience.  After Germany attempted to liquidate ALL Jews, this horror should have ended.  The Jews who were killed were not “liquidated” but many survived who escaped to tell the tale and there were those then and those now who insist it was a fairy tale.

I attend Bible Study class each Saturday morning.  Herman Rosenblat is a member of our class and was a survivor of being forced into concentration camps. He witnessed the death of his family and survived.  If he were the only living survivor it would be enough to convict Mr. Irving and keep him in prison (not for killing Jews) but for the desecration of fostering and lecturing the belief that the Holocaust did not occur. Mr. Irving did not himself kill anyone to my knowledge but his beliefs and teachings free others to repeat genocide of which the Holocaust was the prime example in any generation.

Ms. Lipset won her case against Mr. Irving.  It was a just and proper procedure but did not have the effect that was desired.  Mr. Irving, continues to live and deny and there are many groups he visits who invite him to come and tell the tales he fabricated about the Jews having committed a giant fraud by claiming for themselves the victims of mass murder by the German people, not only of German Jews but Jews throughout Europe and by extension throughout the world.  Mr. Irving still claims he is right and there are many who gladly hear his and other deniers’ stories about the perfidy of Jews who needed to be killed – but, of course, there were only a few and they concocted the lie about six million.

The denial of the existence of the Holocaust and its victims – six additional non Jews destroyed, twelve million people murdered – is certainly a crime.  Insanity or incapability of understanding the event and the sickness of denial is certainly understood by most to be a black mark on the soul of those considered human who propagate this lie, this denial of the existence of murder on such an inhuman scale.

Iran’s hand in supporting “scholarship” to prove that the Holocaust did not exist is pure evil. Steps to rehabilitate the denying of this event are taken even while the survivors still testify to its actuality.
