In the midst of myriad human activities with Mother Nature going her own way – ignoring our ignorance and “well meant” mistakes – most of us remain in ignorance of huge changes taking place while we plod along, noses to grindstones and eyes on some mystical prize. Witness the change in power in the Congress due to a close election but where distrust turned from Republican to Democrat overnight. The in-fighting between luminaries and not so famous plodders in Congress for powerful committee posts is one of the futile attempts to make a flawed system work. I note that disgrace suffered earlier such as the fate of Trent Lott who had much to condemn him, is back in the running for leadership in Republican circles. One might look with a grain or two of salt in the jockeying of certain individuals in this Congress for the Presidential prize in 2008. The futility of trying to accurately predict the next front runners is clearly up to chance.
Solving the problem of nearly 3,000 soldiers dying for nothing in Iraq is as futile as trying to explain their deaths to their families and making things all right once again. That will never be. There is no Baghdad, center of Iraqi power, anymore. It is futile to think of the Iraqis ruling themselves while they are busy killing each other. The kidnapping fracas of only yesterday by a well-orchestrated snatch and run in the heart of Baghdad shows the futility of American patching up their destruction of this land while trying to hand it back to leaders who cannot speak for all Iraqis but only for themselves cementing themselves into immovable positions. It will be futile for Americans to leave the land they left in shambles for Americans cannot make whole what they crumbled up into dust.
Futility is in the air when you factor in Evangelical faith as a prop for Israeli and American power in pieces of the “Holy Land”. Faith will not do it and neither will military power supplied by the Americans do it. This land, never really united for any length of time is fragmented and fighting goes on while futile talks take place everywhere but in the underground warrens where rockets are assembled and fired off in the direction of Jews.
At this point, the warming of the planet by human intervention is irreversible. Smoking less, burning garbage less, shutting down primitive factories, using bicycles instead of gas burning cars and so on will not prevent continuing the melting of Ice caps on this planet. It is futile to warn people on the coasts of all countries to move to higher ground. They will not listen and will not move.
Futility is practiced by too many and the tiny voices of “Warning – Warning” are not heard as heads are held up above the water, crying “Help”.
