I glanced briefly at the headlines of the NY Times and the Miami Herald this morning and was caught by the different editing of important news in these papers. In the Times, the news was that the Democrats are already sharpening their knives to cut into President Bush’s plans and programs. The Herald showed a picture of the President paying court to his base by showing up at a funeral for the dead on Veteran’s Day – and I am not sure (because I did not read the article) if it was for one of the fallen in his war.
I have decided to run for the Board of Directors of my 7th Moorings Association but decline any invitation to serve a 7th year as President. Enough is enough. I would like to stay on as Secretary for that has been a second function I have performed over the years because I type and have a computer and a printer. It is ironic that the chief contenders for “running” the Association have none of the skills necessary to do the job as a replacement President or the know-how to handled and juggle all the problems of a building with 52 different households encompassed within it. They want the power but not the responsibility.
I took a walk-around the Building since I was up early and the Newspapers had not arrived and thought I should have brought a pad and pencil to jot down all the problems I could see from the street. So, I got the pad and pencil and walked around again. It was light out and I could see all the things done or not done that needed correction in some of the visible apartments. I have a short but important list that I will pass on to the new Directors. The newly elected Board (there are nine positions and now only nine running so the entire slate is automatically elected) will have to deal with these. I will be there to record how they perform and handle the myriad details required by democratically organized standard Associations.
Another irony is Carol and I driving a Ford Explorer as a rental car while Carol’s Lexus is being repaired. I believe this is the Ford vehicle with the horrible record of recurring problems. It handles like a truck with bad power steering although it has the high seats needed by both of us who cannot cozy down into sedans so low to ground. Freshly from two courses in driving (Carol one and me two) we discovered a whole old world of bad driving by people using the same thoroughfares that we were on.
A life without little ironies would probably be bliss. But I think again and find life interesting and many times I can hardly wait to get up to see what will be delivered at our door or in life, next.
