Flattered, Bothered and Bewildered

North Miami Beach, FL October 19, 2006
A.H. Schectman

I think I am smart enough to know that the Saturday morning programs on the only Liberal station broadcasting at that time are huckstering nostrums and other faux cures for all kinds of problems besetting our species.  Some animals know enough to eat substances that will purge them of problems of digestion.  The human must be told in excessive terms about some researcher who came up with a combination of medically charged terms that will be sure to save you if you buy a generous supply (well, at least a two months supply) for the low, low introductory price of $19.95.  I listen to them blathering away with the second banana feeding lines to the Dr., Professor, Researcher or  entrepreneur because I don’t want to change the settings on a delicate radio receiver which later on will deliver the progressive news and hosts that I prefer to the conservative drivel most of America enjoys.

But it is the appearance on my e-mails of numberless pleas for me to consider what they are offering in the way of enriching me.  They seem all to speak in a code that others of their ilk understand (I do not) and assure me that I have only a short window of opportunity to take advantage of this or that stock that is hot right at this moment.  Have you ever tried to eliminate these interlopers who muscled their way onto your address list and will not go away?  I have tried insults, clever remarks, and copies of my essays (sure to drive them mad). The sad thing is that some have even read my essays and are evenly divided in agreeing or disagreeing with me.

I am flattered that these individuals (they must belong to a tribe of Gypsies who switched from repairing pots and pans and slathering watery oil on driveways) think that I am in a position to buy their stock picks.  I know of many other possible “tricks” that they could use to approach and convince them they should buy from them.  But, not me.  I have neither the knowledge, interest in nor the resources to take a plunge into unknown waters.

I am bothered by this cabal of sales people who want me to buy, buy and buy.  I cannot; want not, and will not succumb to their blandishments although they have neither style nor cuteness in their heavy-handed landing on my page to let me in on the secrets of getting rich. I am annoyed by them and wish they would somehow disappear. They are smart enough to NOT have a button to click that tells them I do not want their services any more.

I am bewildered by the kind of world we have where getting rich still sticks its wattled head up to be shot off while we are at war. Does any one know how to rid us of them?
