You Can Learn a Lot from a Bunch of Rats

North Miami Beach, FL 07-25-2006
A.H. Schectman

There is so much to comment upon these days.  Messes are everywhere and there is no energy or imagination to clean them up.  This goes for here at home and in other lands.  We have the wherewithal to make things better.  Our world is filled with resources although we are rapidly increasing the pace of using up a finite amount of fossil material.  Our atmosphere is filled with debris that now extends beyond the atmosphere into the stratosphere.  Our medical knowledge tells us that fragile human beings are not really living longer but the list of those who cannot withstand the changed nature of our globe hanging in the heavens weaken and die in ever greater numbers.

All of the above is a critique of the way the powerful are solidifying their ownership of the world without much thought given to its denizens except as expendables who exist to make the rich and powerful richer and more powerful.

Call them nations or revolutionary forces, the ferocious are fighting the placid.  Did you see the report on experiments with colonies of rats?  It seems that one group was bred successfully to live at peace with one another.  The other was bred to be vicious and attack any intrusion into their space.  This is in miniature what is happening in the world today.  There are groups that would like to live in peace and harmony and others for whom the lust for battle is their reason for being.

There is a lesson in the raising of rats.  There are lessons in global warming.  There are daily lessons in the accretion of power to the Bush Presidency.  The world turns and the world changes and it is up to you to determine if it is for the better.

Housing is sadly lacking not just for those made homeless by hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, earthquakes or recessions and depressions.  What the economic status is today in a US not fighting for its life but taking uncounted lives of other peoples living in far off lands – is pretty good for those of us living here legally. What we have is so much better than what others have is the reason there is a flood of worker immigrants who come here over borders that really do not exist.

You can learn a lot from those rats raised separately from each other.  I can see a scenario where the two colonies are brought together and the perception of the vicious ones is that the placid ones have what ought to be theirs and they promptly attack and grind those nice rats into the ground or chase them into the sea and maybe turn on each other and self destruct. Whether it is rat populations or a human population, the potential for good or evil is present and it is our choice.
