Al Sherman wrote that the Ruach session I missed was well attended and I was missed. Thanks for the kind words, Al. But I had to get up at 5:00 a.m. to drive Jon up to Fort Lauderdale for his flight at 7:00. Carol had to wait for a birthday present of Incredible Edibles – a floral arrangement made of fruits – and I was just too tired after this visit and needed a day of rest.
Jon Isaac Schectman will be sixteen in February and already has his learners’ driver’s license. He is still a little boy in many ways but is over six feet tall and is bright, knowledgeable about a lot of things, has opinions and is doing well in school. He also plays saxophone in a Jazz band, rows on a crew, has his own credit card and cell phone and is a good kid. He sleeps a lot and likes to watch cartoon televisions and has a great sense of humor. He is also enamored of Dave Chihuly, the glass blowing genius who makes marvelous concoctions of colors that we saw in our trip to Fairchild Gardens in Coconut Grove. We walked a lot, saw a lot and were each pleased with our company and this trip which ended by driving up AIA to see the Art Deco and other desecrations of the barrier reef to the inland waterway.
Jon went along with us on the itinerary Carol devised. We saw the movie, Munich, on the first day, went to the Everglades and took a tram ride through it on the second day. The last day was devoted to what we discovered was a must see item on the list of what Jon would prefer. He is an aficionado of Chihuly’s work and this was a good end to an all too short visit. We finished the trip with a drive through South Beach on Deco Drive.
This was only the second time that we moved the easy chair away from in front of the Murphy bed and took down the bed. This time it was for Jon to lounge, sleep and watch television. The first time it was used was when Karenne stayed over one night. We had a bonus of four days and nights with Jon’s visit.
We chose eating places that proved to be pretty good. Jon will eat pretty much anything in sight. Carol’s birthday was the 5th and our choice of dining that night was at the Peppermill, but I was as disappointed as Carol that her Veal Françoise turned out to be dry without flavor. Other than that, our plans for hotdogs or pizza were given up in favor of restaurants that worked out just fine.
The visit of our grandson was a high point and Carol reveled in the joint presence of Jon and her cards and presents received for she is now 80 years old.
