There is this Jewish guy, Marc Levin, who is making a film called the Protocols of Zion. If I had been asked if it was a good idea I would have said, no. It is not a good idea and here are a number of reasons why.
The Protocols of THE ELDERS of Zion was a French hoax that appeared after the hysteria of the Dreyfus case which tore France in two but also caused an eruption of particularly violent anti-Semitism. It was taken as holy script into Russia where it flourished and lasted from Tsarist times through the Soviets.
There is a Mr. Le Pen, a French citizen, who is a lineal descendant of those times. His anti-Semitism is his claim to fame and he would be the first to say that the work called, The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, was real and is just as real today. His printing new versions of this story have been welcomed in the Islamic world who find the demonized Jews in that story as real as those they believe have taken away THEIR Holy Land and THEIR capitol, Jerusalem away from the Palestinians whose name is traced back to the Romans who drove the Jews out into The Diaspora – and that is another story for another time.
But, now back to Mr. Levin. This film is not a rendition of the story but a series of interviews that critics say do nothing to expose the hoax or to spread information about the damage it still does – particularly in the Islamic world. No educated person (particularly in westernized lands) would believe this story as credible but it circulates throughout America in Nazi, Aryan, White Supremacist circles and among any group that suffers from bad luck or intense indoctrination about the evil Jews. The original story tells about a dark cellar where these elders plot the take over of European lands and enslavement of Christians. The modern reality is that in the Islamic world the Jews AND Christians are second class citizens who are not and cannot be the equal of any follower of Mohammad.
This movie may have had good intentions but there are places where you do not want to go. It is better to leave bad enough alone and not exacerbate something as old and worn out like this story by a retelling that perhaps reinforces stereotypes.
Of course, I have not seen this film and I think I do not want to see it. It sounds as though it creates a place where I would not want to go. There is this thing called freedom of speech and expression but there are limits. Mr. Levin and his supporters in making this film should think about Mr. Gibson and what he has wrought.
