Nation Forming Formula

North Miami Beach, FL 11-30-2005
A.H. Schectman

Needless to say ‘they’ are going about it all wrong.  Political parties, international cartels, military think tanks or charismatic leaders never get it right.  That is, if you want a democratic nation to arise out of the disorder of people trying to find a successful way of governing themselves.

A tried and true nation forming formula was worked out here under spectacularly unique conditions.  But, this does not mean it will work for other nations waiting to be formed.  In fact, those same conditions do not exist anywhere in the world at this time.  The American experience is unique. While it has had many imitators, things go wrong with parts that do not fit together in the same way. There were over two hundred years of slow development from colonies of far distant England to self governing states to a confederacy that gave way to a constitutional democracy. Add to this a belief in universal education and you have a winner – what we call. America.

Let us try Saddam Hussein before a court of his own people and let them pronounce sentence on him.  But let them sit down, all the factions and fractious people who make up this artificial country and hammer out a constitutional government will be, as it appears to be right now, an exercise in futility.  If the quality of the enforcers (the Republican Party – conservative driven) or even the Liberal muck it all up Democrats the result would be the same.  The history is missing.  The long period of trial and error that is needed is not there.   What is there is chaos and American military might cannot put Humpty together for it was not together before it fell off that wall.

What should be instructive to North Americans, particularly the U.S. and Canada is that theirs is a unique background having sprung from the English experience with a limited monarchy and a powerful two party system that has kept the civility of political intercourse on course.  All the imitators - particularly the unstable Hispanic copy cats to the south and in the islands have shown that what has been lacking is that long period of maturation and testing out the elements that provide us with continuity, if not a perfect or utopian problem free nation whose construction and operation as a Federal entity was glued together by education.

What is wrong with the world is, of course, that it is not all American.  No matter what elements of foods and technical toys are introduced they are still not American. Why is it that we are surprised when “over there” is not like it is over here”?  Think about it.  And, remember, the magic ingredient is education.
