When the President speaks we should immediately discount what he has to say. This is because he seems to be a Johnny One Note who finds comfort in being able to repeat that the cause for our discontent is still the terrible planes crashing into the World Trade Center. He trades on this memory while piecing together a plot that has territorial United States as the focal point of all the other attacks that have been chronicled until today. He has listed ten attacks which include the War in Iraq and not personally directed bombings by Osama bin Laden in other parts of the world. Why do we not know where this unspeakable person is?
But, when the President speaks – in what has been termed a very important message to the people of the United States – he is speaking to the world which disbelieves him and I am sorry to say he is disbelieved here at home. One of the reasons he is disbelieved here at home is that after the 9/11 terror attack and the fright of mailed toxins there have been no activity here except to try to explain how the 9/11 groups managed to get away with carrying out their depredations.
What we have accumulated is evidence of the bungled attempts to play the name game and pointing of fingers. This is particularly true of real disasters of fires and hurricanes that devastated whole sections of the country instead of bombings of Federal Buildings by our own home-grown terrorists since dealt with. But, when the President speaks he must be listened to. His own base now doubts him.
Most of his detractors agree that his speeches do not have the effect intended. None of us are encouraged to believe he is on the right track. In fact, leading us to the right is like leading us right into concentration camps for those who question or disagree with him. The signs are there and despite his sounding more and more like an uneducated redneck, what he is spouting is not reassuring. Our President is repeating words written for him to fill time because of inaction.
Where is Osama bin Laden? Where are the camps training terrorists around the world? Why are the terror of attacks on our own land a blue print for discontented minorities in other lands to perpetuate a cycle of destruction and fear during a time of unprecedented growth of populations and possibilities for putting those populations to work in building a new and better world?
Unfortunately, Mr. Bush is spouting words to comfort his base and that comfort is small compared to the evidence of our own eyes and ears that tell us that all is not well here at home and in other lands it is much worse.
