Anybody Want Some Free Guppies?

North Miami Beach, FL 09-27-2005
A.H. Schectman

No, I didn’t say free Puppies.  They’re not allowed in our condominium. But I do have some premium guppies, all sizes and both sexes.  That last is the problem.  In the past we had some fancy guppies with beautiful tails and I made sure they were males for the several fantail females we had purchased.  They didn’t work out.  It seems the males liked their images in the walls of the tank and paid court to THEM rather than the ladies.

Now, with the very inexpensive “feeder” guppies – that just means they are common, plain and very prolific – there is now a plethora of little guppies that have overfilled the capacity of our five gallon tank.  Now, these are healthy, well fed and very frolicky guppy babies of all sizes and ages from tiny little dots with eyes to little horny and very active bigger ones to ones almost as big as their mamas.  Those mamas are in constant production and I have to move this merchandise to make room for more.

You do know the trick behind all of this, don’t you?  I will supply you with as many of the little critters that you want.  Some are really beautiful but none, unfortunately, with the fantails that are so attractive.  They are yours, as many as you want for my tank must provide more room for those that are left.  Sooo – you can come and get them.  I will fish them out and put them in a plastic bag filled with water and you can take them home tooo - your tank.  Oh, yes, you will need a tank.  While you are at it you should get some gravel to fill the bottom; some plants (it is easier to get fake plants than deal with real ones; a thermometer; an aerator and a filter.  You probably won’t need a heater in Florida’s climate – so that is a plus along with the ever changing show these little fish provide – but, oh, yes – you also should have a hood for the tank (they sometimes jump out) and the hood should have lights so you can watch their antics after dark.

These little fish are very easy to take care of.  I finally found that there is a machine that feeds them twice daily and you only have to change water and add new water when there is an inch or so below the top of the tank because of evaporation. You will find that with only a little bit of effort and some patience the fish will produce more fish and you might want to move up to a bigger size tank.  The rule is about a gallon of water for every inch of fish.

Now, don’t go and get crazy and hanker after black mollies, angle fish and other pretty kinds for they are kind of delicate.  But, those guppies – they won’t disappoint you, I guarantee.  How many shall I save for you?
