Being Above and Looking Down on Problems

North Miami Beach, FL 08-18-2005
A.H. Schectman

I had a random thought that I would like to share with you – perhaps you can join with me in sharing the view.

It occurred to me that if I could grab the seat of my pants and the back of my neck and lift myself way up over the world, I could be witness to all the shenanigans that are going on in the different parts while the world spins.  You could say, as the five minute listing of major problems in the Miami Herald or as in the The Week, a compendium of brief reports representing differing takes on what is going on in the major world problem areas, that what interests you would be on the real map of the world from a perspective a couple of miles up – sort of like what the Astronauts get to see – without the space ship, and space suits and such.  Perhaps you could hitch yourself up the same way and together look down on the same old things.

In a glance I (or we) can see the oil fields in Arab countries whose wealth is created by our needs.  Instead of using that wealth to heal the problems between bickering Muslim peoples in different countries, they just up the ante on the prices we pay at the pump.  That glance tells a lot.  A boost for peace could be created by Saudis and others looking at the misery in their own world and use that wealth to help out.  This is sort of like a dream, isn’t it?

Then we could identify those countries that have modern welfare systems where most people are taken care of from the cradle to the grave – through progressive taxation.  People in those countries do not have the worries that bedevil the believers in our country who are praying to Jesus to do something about important issues such as abortion and prayer in the schools.  In those countries education is basically free up to university and people are HELPED by banks that forgive up to 40% of loans if a degree is obtained and just dropped off at the bank office. Over there they dreamed up REAL Medicare and real Medicaid.

Then there is the matter of all that wasted solar power we can see shining down most days on most parts of the world.  Looking closely you can see here and there windmills turning out electricity and helping reduce the pollution from all that oil being burned.  If you can get through the global warming and pollution you can see in some places good ideas are turning sand into gold and aridity into productive use.  You can also see us cutting down the last of our forests and allowing huge corporations to produce the food and other products we used to buy at the corner store. Being up here and looking down is quite instructive.
