Unsolved Mysteries

North Miami Beach, FL 10-25-2004
A.H. Schectman

I’ve lost my special pocket knife again.  I do this regularly for I shift it between the left hand pockets of whichever pair of pants I choose to wear. It is on the floor under something, somewhere. I have given up sweating the small stuff.

There are many more cataclysmic mysteries ratcheting through the country and the world today that make the temporary loss of that knife insignificant.

One of the greatest mysteries in this American world is how divided it is after a disputed election gave us a uniter, not a divider.  I cannot understand; I am equally sure that you cannot understand why this President might win the hearts and minds of enough Americans to put him in office for another four years.  His regressive programs have taken the progressive nature of American democracy many steps backward and in the wrong direction.  How can this be?  I noticed that Mr. Kerry played the “faith” card yesterday here in Florida.  His statement was a good and fair one but it is not the kind that welds Middle America to Conservatism and the Republican Party.

The biggest unsolved mystery is here in Florida.  How can this state with all the eyes of the world focused on it not have fixed the problems that made it impossible for fair voting and counting those votes this time around?  Carol and I got to vote rather handily but the question remains as to the management of the counting not only of our votes but mostly in those areas where people have gone unregistered and have been steered in wrong directions where their votes disappear.

A huge mystery is why the war in Iraq has not been won.  It was declared officially over by President Bush but he seems not to notice that slaughtering of Iraqis go on by terrorists attracted to that country (or angry Iraqis who resent America’s presence).  The sunny denials that anything is wrong, while it is clear that many things are very, very wrong, are a mystery to me.  Why it is not a mystery to half of America is a mystery to the other half of America.

It is a mystery how the greatest country in the world, with one of the most thorough educational systems in the world and with one of the freest peoples in the world should be bound by ignorance and belief in stupid protestation by spinners and twisters of actual events they know happened but choose to believe the lies they have been turned into.

There are a lot of unsolved mysteries and they will never be solved.  I think we have to live with them – until we wake up and shake the sleep out of our eyes.
