I think that most of America (having not yet made up their minds) was watching the “debate” last night. It was a repeat – almost word for word – of what we have been hearing and seeing, seemingly forever. But, I picked up on a Texan’s braggadocio, Mr. Bush’s to be exact, that worried me somewhat. He boasted that because a great many Americans could not benefit from a failed British vaccine, he would not get a vaccine shot – SO THERE! This is a cause for worry.
Just suppose that Mr. Bush manages to squeak through and win another term (people of faith might say, “God Forbid!”). If this vaccine free President was not immediately retired to an air-conditioned and air-purified bubble for the next four years, he might come in contact with his many followers who will emulate his “bravery” or, just pain silliness. If THEY do not get flue shots and help to spread this new strain (one that pops up almost every year), they could give the defenseless President (unless he lives in that bubble) a killing strain and that would make Richard Cheney (who has bunkered down in at least one famous incident) our President.
All of this is just to say that you must weigh the words of John Kerry or the boast of George W. Bush. Actually, I don’t think that Barbara Bush would let her younger politician son carry through his threat. She is much smarter than he is and I think the American public is smarter than he is and the combination might decide that he is too smart by far by making this claim that would be a fatal danger to him and for the country.
This last “debate” was interesting because of a couple of things. One was that George W. Bush learned from his first mistake in the first encounter in Florida. His mobile expressions showing anger and unease, when shown next to his controlled opponent was thought to be a detriment to his performance. So, in this last joint appearance, he put on a face that was truly interesting. He tried to smile a-la- Reagan showing his tolerance for the slogans and promises made by John Kerry. He looked over at Kerry constantly and, while he took no notes compared to Kerry, he TRIED to look competent and did come back verbally most of the time with what his handlers had drummed into him since that first “debate”.
Mr. Bush not only is a braggart and is incapable of demonstrating his superiority to the much better educated and prepared Mr. Kerry, but he tried too hard to appear what he is not. He is not Presidential and we would be doing him an injustice by keeping him around for four more years.
