I think it is significant that a lot of voting registration activity has been going on recently. I think it is more significant that a host of uninvolved are watching it but are not helping it proceed. There are many more Black people (minorities) who have been actively involved with getting people to register so that they can vote in the next election. This might be the turning point of getting a Democrat elected to the White House and many more Democrat House and Senate Members elected at the same time. I am curious to know if the Republicans are really that passive about voter registration in Black or minority areas.
The lessons of the 2000 election along with the constantly revealed aberrations in how we register, vote and have those votes counted have been learned and some Democrats and many Black (minority) activists have been trying to rectify the earlier lapses and mistakes and get it right this time. What I am most interested in is that the uninvolved during this process is the entire Republican Party apparatus that is not interfering with the registration process but they are watching it with some great interest. I think they can see that the fervor of those who were disenfranchised in previous elections are not about to let that happen again. They are watching and I think they are getting worried and have been worried for some time.
The lessons learned by the Democrats when the Republican Governor of Florida conspired with the Republican National Committee to seek redress from the Supreme Court they did so by claiming unfair practices against the Republicans were taking place. The Supreme Court complied and ended the counting that was sure to have taken a different turn. Putting aside the observation that Al Gore might not have made a much different President had the counting been allowed to go on, it was the Republican organization that sent their troops to influence the counting in the Florida East Coast Counties. My vote may not have been heeded because of this intervention. This has made me angry and frustrated.
I think it curious that the Republicans are not courting the Black (minority) voters (in terms of registrations) as avidly as the Democrats. They may know something that we do not know. I hear the repeated remark that what the Republicans are counting on is the fear of another Al Queda attack just before the election to keep the status quo.
These are cynical evaluations of a desperate fight to keep Mr. Bush and the Republican minority in power in the country where in both the House and the Senate they have a slight majority. These facts are peculiar to this place and time but why are they uninvolved while others are desperately signing up new voters?
