The Power of Just One

Bin Laden - Moore
North Miami Beach, FL 07-10-2004
A.H. Schectman

I really didn’t want to comment on Fahrenheit 9/11 until my Republican and Conservative friends saw it. This is a motion picture that has tremendous impact and has the power to change the way we think about our current President in the same way that two planes crashing into and bringing down the Trade Towers has energized the Islamic world.  The power of one, a case in point, is about Osama bin Laden and Michael Moore.

Just look at how the non-Muslim world looks at the United States. The most powerful nation in the world, culturally, militarily and monetarily was brought to its knees and left demoralized by the word of one man. This man, after whom a multitude of children are now named, said to his followers – “Go”.  And they did and the towers fell and their imitators go off on their own to bedevil our current leaders to crank up fear and color to let us know we are in for it again - soon.

Michael Moore has produced a movie using the words and vignettes of people in the current government to show how they lied and led us into a war against Afghanistan and Iraq. This war, we are assured by the current leaders, is a single war against Osama bin Laden and Weapons of Mass Destruction sure to be found in Iraq as soon as the co-conspirator with ObL, Saddam Hussein, was put down. The Moore film destroys this notion. Those who believe in the Bush infallibility seek to impugn the pugnacious Mr. Moore as a liar. Understandably, the supporters and backers of Mr. Bush & Company do not want to see the film. It artfully is one-sided and biased up to the hilt. The current President’s lack of words and his unexplainable delay in response to being told of the second plane hitting the second Tower, are there. The footage showing the distasteful way the war monger, Wolfowitz, put his comb into his mouth to use saliva to comb his hair creates a defining moment.

I think that this film has more power than the one word used by Mr. bin Laden. The only problem is that we got to see the filming of the Trade Towers falling by unplanned motion pictures made by an amateur. Mr. bin Laden benefited by unexpected luck. He did not plan to have a photographer on hand. Mr. Moore is not having trouble getting people to see his film, but these are not the people who should see it. Bin Laden has not made one cent from destroying the Trade Towers. But the Muslim World felt a rush of emotion that carries it to unify in opposition to the Great Satan and its Israeli minions who persecute Palestinians. Moore is making a lot of money but has yet to reach the heartland of Republicans and Conservatives.

A case in point is the power of just one.
