The headline reads “Suicide Bomber Outside Shiite Mosque in Iraq Kills Four Worshippers.” What an outrage!
The outrage for the Islamic world is that it should have been Jews killed by faith-driven bombers. Killing Jews in a crowded shopping area in an Israeli city would have been a justification of faith as well as retribution for the existence of a Jewish city in a Jewish nation. It should be unthinkable for Moslems to kill Mohammedans. The truth is, warring factions among Islamic peoples have been slaughtering each other for centuries. Ultra pious Jews, the Orthodox and Hasidim mourn as dead a child who marries out of his faith – to a Jew of either another Orthodox group and definitely a Jew, either of Conservative or Reform movement on the liberal fringe. There have been no bombings recorded of each other’s religious sites.
After WWII and the HOLOCAUST, Jews united in proclaiming “Never Again” to permitting themselves being victims. They may be divided on wearing hats and keeping kosher. They are very united against the perception throughout the world that it is just fine for Moslems kill Jews. It is because Anti-Semitism has some moral explanation of faith that is meaningful to them aside from hatred of Israel.
We did not notice the Iraq/Iranian ten-year military actions against each other. This was a religious war as much as anything else was. No one remembers that the disunity of Arab nations invading Israel for their own gain could not coordinate their forces to demolish a tiny nation fighting on its own ground.
Certain Jews may consider some claims to Jewish ancestry bogus. It has never led to war of Jew against Jew. The history of post-exilic Jewish life is an account of their becoming valued citizens (where allowed) of their adoptive countries. The history of these countries shows they have flourished with their Jewish citizens’ inventiveness and creating jobs for others regardless of religious faith or race.
The Muslim Diaspora has proven to be good for countries welcoming them and many countries can boast of followers of Mohammed rising to high position. Unfortunately, there is a distrust of Shiite against Sunni although both are united against the Jews. And then, there is the Wahabi notions of correctness in Saudi Arabia. What an outrage!
