The Hamas Contribution

North Miami Beach, FL 12-13-2003
A.H. Schectman

In looking through the news accounts of attempts by the two principle sides in the Mid-East mess to meet and negotiate a peace agreement, Hamas inserted its contribution.  Hamas is an unrecognized faction of “Palestinian” insurgency that acts like a state within a state. It has a government that is self-selected. It has a large amorphous constituency. It has a great numbers of supporters who willingly participate in plans to create multitudes of “suicide” bombers who will blow themselves up on command from the leaders of Hamas. It is a force in the politics and military actions against Israel and Israeli defenses against this force. No matter how careful Israeli military and anti-terrorist forces seek out the Hamas enemy they insert themselves in a non-state and defeat the attempts to build a Palestinian state while desperately needing that state to fight an endless war.

The Hamas contribution is to disrupt any serious moves on either the part of “moderate” Palestinian representatives who themselves are not elected but people of good faith who are trying to work with the Israelis. There are Israelis who will work with counterparts in the Islamic world but there is the presence of intractable and murderous groups, the most vicious of which is Hamas, that immediately intervene with interminable use of human bombs whose point has long since been made and understood.  There is the cynical view of official proclamations by Hamas. This is that it has one thing that Israel does not have; an unlimited source of human bombs it will employ. Hamas has persuaded its followers that dying for this cause is the only worthwhile thing to live for.  This last is a contradiction that Hamas certainly cannot nor is willing to see.

In every plan, there is something that someone can criticize and blow up big enough to fight against. Hamas does not represent a country and is not an army in uniform fighting a “legal” battle.  Building is so much harder than destruction.  That is why there is no peace in the Middle East including the on-going war in Iraq.  The forces in Iraq that are sniping at invaders are very similar to Hamas. Unlike Hamas, these “patriots” have not gotten around to rounding up the huge numbers of willing suicides to recreate the old or create the new Iraq. The Iraq opposition to America is linked with the American support of Israel and the Hamas contribution is being factored in. In both conflicts, monetary support comes from surrounding countries and these countries are using “martyrs” to fight Israel and the U.S.

Convicted murderers killed by lethal injection is too much like putting down animals with cruel chemicals. We protest this. Yet, mayhem goes on by the United States with Hamas adding its contribution. None of this works.

We have yet to learn that natural selection is not aided by humans who weed out the weak and vulnerable by wars and terrorism.
