Missteps

North Miami Beach, FL 12-03-2003
A.H. Schectman

You cannot ignore the Bush message.  He and his spokespersons relentlessly will do most anything in order to win in ’04.  He WILL win.  He has the money, the keys to the thinking of Middle America and the backing of Big Oil, Big Business and big Banking, all the ingredients to roll over the rest of us.

The missteps his surrogates are making are interesting.  One is misdirection perfected by Rush Limbaugh. Bush cannot be that good and the Liberals have not been that bad. Limbaugh cannot say a negative word about the person of George W. Bush. He does say, over and over, that Bill Clinton is alive, well, and responsible for anything bad before, now and in the future even as the Republican steamroller is flattening the Democrats in the House and the Senate.

The former President is rarely in the news but he is resurrected daily to remind us that he (W.J.C.) is responsible for any possible hitch in the forward campaigning by Conservatives to complete the dismantling of anything Liberal since the seminal work of the Roosevelt era. The vilification of Bill Clinton goes on. Simultaneously, and even more so, Hillary Rodham Clinton is painted a co-conspirator and now a voracious seeker of the presidency in her own right. Claims of Liberal past misdeeds are quoted as truth and as though happening today. Chief Democrat leaders are denied any credibility in their public stands and are caricatured personally as people incapable of leading and as bumbling idiots.  Of course, all conservative warriors are pure as angels and white as snow.

The missteps made by the current administration can be traced to the schism between two camps in America early in its history. One was in favor of individual freedom for everyone while the other favored elevation of a special class of special people.  The fight since then has been over extending rights and freedoms.  The special class becomes fewer in number through exclusion rather than including millions who may have the vote but not the power of the special class of special people. This latter group is on the march to winning a second term for Mr. Bush because people like Rush Limbaugh keep beating the drums of war against Bill Clinton.

This is a serious misstep.  Every time it happens, it provides another comparison between Liberal attempts to lift the abused majority against the chief abuser and leader of the Conservative pack, G.W. Bush.  You do not even have to look closely.  The yammering goes on at an increasing pace while a great nation is distracted by a bad war, distant peace and money is thrown at our next duly elected President. They are so good that you cannot see them stumble.
