Flat Roof Society

North Miami Beach, FL 11-16-2003
A.H. Schectman

I think it is about time to begin to form the FLAT ROOF SOCIETY.  Unlike the Flat Earth people who deny that the Sun is the center of our universe, the flat roof people need to think about the opportunity having a flat roof facing the Sun affords them.  Just think; if all the people who live in condominiums or in houses with flat roofs were to research in, invest in and reap the benefits of solar energy collectors on their roofs, our reliance on oil would be changed forever.  This renewable source of energy, the Sun, has been there all along to warm us in our caves that had openings facing south and today to provide electricity drawn from cells to convert the rays of the Sun into power that can be tapped into the grids established by such institutions as FPL.

It is one of those things that appear at times.  You know, an idea that has a great deal of merit but no enthusiasm.  That is, perhaps, why I would like to form the FLAT ROOF SOCIETY.  I believe that there should be no flat roof unequipped with some form of collector of either heat or electricity.

When Carol and I visited Barbados we were able to see the way the sun’s power was harnessed by the people there who did not have to have flat roofs but they did have solar collectors that sent heat to tanks that already were warmed by the sun to provide them with hot water for their kitchens and baths.  In another context, there have always been those who have claimed that it is too expensive today to invest in converters to change the Sun’s rays directly into electricity. My contention is that despite the cost, if enough of us with flat roofs were to join in a cooperative to do the research and invest time and some effort, we could begin the process of producing and selling electric power into the grid that our government says is a good thing to do.  There are even incentives that by law the FLAT ROOF SOCIETY can take advantage of to begin the effort to create a self-sufficient source of power so we can be weaned away from dependence on oil.

There are car races across the country where solar powered vehicles show that this can be done to produce street machines to run on solar power exclusively and produce no toxic by-products.  Instead of a slow drift to hybrid cars, research and development of solar powered cars should parallel the development of power derived from collectors on flat roofs.

I am committing myself to an education program to convince my neighbors in my condominium to form the first FLAT ROOF SOCIETY in Florida!
