Numbers

North Miami Beach, FL 10-11-2003
A.H. Schectman

Admittedly, I am not good at numbers.  I prefer to praise Carol’s interest in and grasp of the intricacies of balance sheets, preferably the rise of stocks, paying bills on time and boldly defending our record of making those payments to hospital accounting departments.  She also has a knack of memory, knowing that our protection by the NEW JERSEY Blue Cross/Blue Shield is good and true and should be respected by ignorant Florida bean counters ensconced in Hospital cellars or attics.

But, the numbers are not good in the Arab/Israeli contest.  I note with interest that there is unrest on the Rutgers campus, my old Alma Mater.  I cannot imagine how the Banks of the Raritan, once thronging with veterans wearing their old “Ike” jackets and representing an older slice of campus population, has changed to contesting camps of Jewish students and Middle Eastern Muslims along with their supporters.

One would think that the heavily Jewish northeastern United States would outweigh the newer enrollees who came to bury the Jews and praise the followers of Arafat.  But, again, numbers are a problem for me.  One of the new issues that is reported in the New York Times today is that of refugees.  One cannot really believe that the Palestinian “refugees” today are not the ones who were deliberately kept in “camps” since the Egyptian, Saudi Arabian, Jordanian and Syrian armies attacked the newly created Israel and their Muftis and Mullahs exhorted the Muslim residents of Palestine to get out of the way so Muslim armies could drive the Jews into the sea. The numbers of “refugees” still in those camps have multiplied beyond imagination and one of the problems with reparations and “return” is that those numbers would engulf and destroy what Israel has built.

Now, there is the issue of the Jewish Refugees who left voluntarily or who were made to think it would be better to get out of North African Muslim lands, out of Yemen and other places Jews have lived for more than a thousand years.  Their numbers are real, but tiny compared to the magnified numbers that huge numbers of “Arab” or “Muslim” protagonists on behalf of the beleaguered “Palestinians” who live in the Palestinian portion of the old British mandate of “Palestine.

It is a problem of numbers and, as I have said, it is of a magnitude that I, who cannot keep household accounts, cannot keep track of.  I think Carol has the answer and she should step up and face those other more numerous numbers of defenders of the Faith of Allah.
