Draining the Treasury

North Miami Beach, FL 09-11-2003
A.H. Schectman

Mr. Bush assumes ordinary citizens are a cash cow, an unending source of revenue, to replenish our country’s Treasury as he routinely empties it.  It once was the American creed that money taken from the people must be paid back to the people and an empty treasury meant that we had a healthy economy.  All that has changed.  People do not want to be taxed but demand a lot of services at the same time.  Our Treasury has been emptied to repay the rich and powerful for their role as “The Rich and the Powerful”.  Tax rebates, refunds and reductions for the favored few have surely emptied the Treasury while the burden squeezes cash cows, ordinary citizens, that produce the wealth of this country.

War empties Treasuries.  Great Britain, once a great empire that ruled the seas with its great navy, lost its status as a super power at the end of a debilitating war.  At the end of World War I, Great Britain not only lost its best and brightest young men in patriotic suicide mission in ditches in the French countryside, but also had its Treasury drained to the point where the once super power has shrunken to second or third world status.  Tony Blair, still trying to keep pace with the big powers today, has further drained the ex-chequer being the sidekick of Bush II.

In its mad dash to beat the U.S. in every aspect of science, the Soviet Union ultimately impoverished itself and split into independent nations trying the nearly impossible job to become democracies in the image of America. It has no Treasury to speak of. It has not transformed itself into a democracy quite in our image.

Nation building and costs of change are huge amounts of money.  Huge amounts of money intended for nation healing or nation building are drained from Treasuries. They go directly into the pockets of greedy and adept individualists who personally profit from insider knowledge of how the money system works.

Our U.S. Treasury that had an unimaginable surplus at the end of the Clinton years was drained in an instant with the arrival of the Bush Team.  This group, smarting from its losses against Saddam Hussein who actually did not lose the first Gulf War, watched Iraq rise from the ashes to become a monster wielding Weapons of Mass Destruction. The self-appointed warrior, George W. Bush, has put us into unimaginable debt by emptying the treasury to pay homage to wealth while futilely pursuing our enemies, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

I am tired of paying taxes on my Social Security retirement - a fund that was built by my taxes during my working years. I am being milked of my resources while the Bushes reward the Rich. Please answer this question. What is wrong with a country in debt that relies on cash cows to refill its Treasury each time it is empty?
