The "Anti" Gang

North Miami Beach, FL 02-28-03
A.H. Schectman

Have you noticed the “anti” gang operating all over the institutions of America?  These are the “Destructive” Republicans.  I remember a gaggle of “Progressive” Republicans.  Whatever happened to them?  They were not the slash and burn kind who are in putative power today.  They would have been satisfied with a mandate helped along with “Me Too” Democrats.  In fact, now that I think of it a bunch of “Me Too” Republicans were derided by their conservative brethren back in the days when FDR and Harry Truman ran the government.  There was clearly delineated progress then – the straight line from medieval feudal loyalties to something resembling the kind of democracy I think we all want.  Somewhere along that line this “anti” gang appeared and it (they) are trying to dismantle the nice sensible world we had come to think was our birthright.

I think the anti government crowd that is in charge of the government now are making critical mistakes.  These are the mistakes of believing their own propaganda, choosing a likeable but defective spokesperson, pandering to the worst chauvinistic chords in waving the flag and singing “God Bless America” and forgetting that God did not tell anyone to go to war on His, Hers or Its behalf.

I do believe that the basic decency that is inherent in the American character is offended by ingesting cholesterol packed super-sized meals as the prime goal in life. Deep down the anti-government rhetoric spouted by the gang in Washington, D.C. that governs in its own name and for its own benefit offends decent people everywhere.

When all of us Americans receive the same health and retirement benefits as the politicians running our government we will turn “anti” to “pro”.  When the attacks on the public schools turn to supporting them the elitist move to special “not-so-public” schools only for those who have access to privileged knowledge will end.  When the headlong destructive road to “privatization” ceases and positive programs are adopted along the lines of doing the most for the masses, we will have a sensible “people” centered economy.  Finally, when we begin charging the profiteers who create government-sized monopolies with the cost of making all the prices for goods and services reachable we will begin to have the sensible world our children deserve.

The “anti” gang in Washington and their clones in State Capitols have forgotten that government in this country is responsible to the people - not to private wealth.  Let us continually remind them of this fact.
