I am sure that the clone I am not looking forward to being born would already have a number of strikes against him. He/it would be immoral, illegal, have a tendency to be fat and cost way too much. I cannot get rid of the notion that our Compassionate Conservative Religious Right in charge of faith-based charities isn’t raising a holy fuss over human intervention and assumption of their God’s powers. They should be reminding us of THE FLOOD, THE FIRE NEXT TIME and of course, the reward the builders of BABBLE received.
But, the most practical problem is what will I do with my clone? Where will I put him/it? I hardly have enough room for MY “stuff” and he/it most assuredly will need a lot of “stuff” him/itself.
On the other hand, should I build a closet to stuff him into? This won’t be hard to do for our Condo rules say that we can have up to four people living in a two-bedroom unit. It would get really, really crowded if Carol was cloned too. Of course, if there were four of us we could have really neat card games with zest to them for the ones we have with just the two of us are predictable. We could sing quartets if the clones could do soprano and tenor to our alto and bass. But, would they like the kind of music we sing?
I think cloning is a dangerous idea. You never will know what you are going to get for, like human birth, you have hopes that whatever flavor you get it will be better than the present models. In human birth lies the future but cloning digs up the past.
I think about cloning a lot and I would prefer reincarnation in to a new person starting all over again with the chance of getting it right this time. I expect clones would only be able to repeat the same mistakes we made the first time all over again rather than make interesting new possibilities.
The Religious RIGHT, conservatives and thickheaded, does nothing with the problem of unwanted, unneeded and costly human birth except to tell the under-aged, the raped, the abused and the unwilling to go ahead and have their babies. We already hear a deafening silence over their willingness to pay or care for the new lives.
But, where is their outrage against human replication of their God’s plan for two humans to get together to produce new life and to multiply naturally? Or, is there a tacit approval to the corporations showing individual initiative to create life and to create new businesses that will place profits where they will do the most good? Will that place be in the pockets of their bought and paid for politicians?
I am NOT sanguine about this cloning business. I do not think Federal involvement will happen. You cannot depend on it anymore unless it is to approve of the private sector taking over the planning, processing and packaging the clones. I can see a conflict over private secretiveness and invasion of privacy with the new governmental agencies that are being built as we speak. They are only afraid of terrorists, of course. The States that cannot pay their bills are paralyzed by 9/11 and Federal abandonment of jobs the NATION was once responsible for. I worry that ordinary people will not be able to see the dangers of bringing clones into their families. Where will they sleep? Will they want to go to a Charter School or use Vouchers to get into the best school across town? Will they be smart enough to get into the college of their choice? Will they be willing to go to war to protect their birthright and country?
I worry a lot about cloning. He/it raises a lot of questions doesn’t it/he? I never really wanted one.
