Blurred Vision / The Blurred Lines

North Miami Beach, FL 12-14-02
A.H. Schectman

There are times when I find I cannot automatically see clearly and my vision is blurred.  I have had a retina problem that was mostly corrected by two surgeries.  But I have been left with a number of floaters in my eye that obscure my vision at times. I usually can blink away these obstructions and see well enough.  Retinal tears can cause a zigzag apparition to appear and you have to rest and wait and they go away after a time.

But, there are things that are blurry and cannot be attributed to vision problems.

The lines between government and privatization of all kinds of services have become blurred and it is hard to see where one begins and the other leaves off.  Henry Kissinger’s appointment to a Federal Commission is a fresh example.  He wishes to keep the consulting firm he created and believes there would be NO conflict of interest between it and the investigation of 9/11. He chose, however, not to stay in his appointed PUBLIC position and return to his private business practice.  Trent Lott, on the other hand, in the face of furious indignation over his privately expressed beliefs chooses to stay in his highly public position and issues a THIRD apology instead.

The link between government and private direction of PUBLIC concerns is blurred further when you seek clarification about the tie between interests at the very top of our governmental structure.  Oil interests of our President and Vice President have not interfered with their election and conduct of governmental business.  The line between what is good for business and what is good government becomes even more significant in their conduct of public business.  They can’t evade the connection and both are unapologetic and move even more quickly in a search for ways to take over Iraqi oil.

In the current administration’s quest for privatization of PUBLICALLY OWNED enterprise the lines are wavy and have become hard to see where that line actually should be.  The privatization of education is proceeding briskly at the expense of the sound structure that evolved over a hundred years of experimentation with many successes. The way we take care of our poor and infirm is targeted to be handed over to the “FAITH BASED” charities imbedded in Churches and do good organizations.

The most powerful nation in the world cannot solve these problems that belong to ALL THE PEOPLE and this current administration is passing the buck to private and religious organizations of good people instead of spreading the burden over the entire nation. This nation should be concerned about its brothers and sisters.

The lines are blurred because our leaders cannot see.
