Ennui
NMB, Florida March 24, 2002 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. ENNUI It seems that events are not flowing very fast these days. The inexorable flow of time has caught in the track of forward motion and we have slowed down a lot. We should take stock of the situation we find ourselves in and study the track that has been laid down and the record that has been added up. This is not to say that no progress has been made or that change has not been seen. But there is neither much to brag about nor anything to write home about either. What it is I am saying is that we are gripped by an ennui that is cloying and tight without much room to breathe and if we look closely we will see that the machine has slowed and crawled almost to a halt. No one has seen anything or knows anything about that guy, what's his name, who bombed the twin towers. His cohorts, his main assistants have disappeared along with him. No one knows where they are. The Arab nations are beginning to assemble somewhere dry where they will talk over the Saudi "peace" plan between themselves and the Israeli nation. No one is talking to the Palestinians. The Palestinians are blowing themselves up with as many Israeli's as they can. But not much is happening in either Arabland or Jewishstate to alter the state of affairs. Mr. Bush seems to appear busy. There is no plan behind his peripatetic slide towards South America to which he has linguistic ties. His main men, such as Cheny, Powell, Rumsfield and the Attorney General guy, have settled down into the approaching summer haze where everything slows down. Nothing much is being done and nothing of import will take place. The Catholic Church has tripped up on its robe and can't get up. The time of ennui is upon us. We are bored and boring. We have been visited by boring people. The Democrats are much more messy and interesting than the Republicans are. Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
