Wafa Idris
NMB, Florida February 11, 2002 A.H. Schectman THINKING ALLOWED Essays on Issues, Ideas and Reflections on the Times. Published Now and Then. Opinions Pro or Con Are Welcome. Wafa Idris (NY Times 02-11-02 p. A8) There are those who will justify Wafa Idris' act as a human bomb because the crimes of the Israelis (Jews, Zionists, and killers of Christ) need her sacrifice. The incidental and collateral damage done to civilians whom she never knew; the incidental and collateral murder of other people living in their own country; and the glorification of her act in "Arab" newspapers and in the public expressions of admiration of her bravery - all of these miss the point of her needless death. This young woman was molded into a weapon by the helplessness of her people who have no leader, have no state and have no will to find better solutions than turn their offspring into human bombs. Nothing that the Israelis do in retaliation can be painted in any other colors than - "Help, I have been attacked - there are the people who supported the attacker - our blood cries out for revenge." We Americans are doing that just now. I see both acts, the human bomb and senseless shedding of the bomber's life and the lives of her victims, as an "act and reaction" mechanism that has become jammed. The Israelis are wrong but how is it that they also are right? The notion of "Right" and "Wrong" is used badly. In the Mid-East the struggle is over power, ownership of land, oil and dictatorships and cynical rulers vying for ascendancy. The right for the Israeli State to exist is cast as a criminal act and religious sacrilege as long as the Palestinian State is prevented from being born. Who is stopping either from living a normal life in other parts of the world? Why are Israel and the Palestinians scapegoats? Instead of glorifying women and children and pat them posthumously on the back they should be encouraged to live. They should be sent to school, allowed to grow up and find their places in a world where people trade and cooperate in the business of social, political and economic interchange with their neighbors. One cannot but mourn Wafa Idris. What a waste. What stupidity. Carol's Evaluation: 10 out of 10.
